You cancelled your gym membership by e-mail or online, and the club ignores it and keeps billing you. Or your contract says that a cancellation must come by mail. Why a letter, not e-mail
- Try the easy way first. Many states let you cancel in more ways than by mail. New York requires health clubs to accept a cancellation by website, e-mail, phone, mail or in person (GBL § 624); in California you can cancel a new contract within five business days by first-class mail, e-mail or in person (Civ. Code § 1812.85).
- When the club does not react, a delivery record helps. Billing often goes on until the club records your cancellation. USPS records the delivery and the signature, so you can show the date when the club had your letter.
- Some contracts name the mail. In an August 2025 complaint, the FTC said that one gym chain told members to send mailed cancellations by certified or registered mail (FTC press release). These are allegations, not findings; your own contract and your state's law are what count.
Example to copy
I cancelled my membership at [gym name], member number [number], by e-mail on [date], and they still bill me. Write a cancellation letter that refers to my e-mail, to the address for notices in my contract. Ask for a written confirmation and the end date of billing. Then mail it by Certified Mail.

Good to know
- Read the cancellation clause first: the address, the notice period, and whether the club wants its own form.
- Send the letter early. Printing and USPS delivery take a few business days.
- If the club has its own form, you can add a copy as an enclosure. Your AI gives you a link to upload it.
- Keep paying until the end date that the contract gives, or ask your bank how to stop a charge after the cancellation took effect.
FAQ
Does the letter carry my signature?
No. It carries your name in print, not a handwritten signature. If your contract asks for a signed notice, ask the club whether a printed name is enough.
Does the letter prove what I wrote?
No. USPS records the delivery and the signature, not the content. Keep the PDF preview as your copy of the letter.
Do I get the green return receipt card?
You get the tracking number and the USPS tracking link, which shows the delivery. We cannot get the signed return receipt for you yet.
Can you tell me if my contract is valid?
No. We give no legal advice and do not check your case. Your state attorney general's consumer office can help.
